Area hunters say the prescribed burns are a boon for wildlife.
“Burning has always been a good tool,” said Jeff Johnston, of Franklin, a member of the Ruffed Grouse Society. “When you burn, you’re releasing new growth down low to the ground where grouse, deer and other animals can browse. The best thing is it’s inexpensive, and you’re not burning diesel fuel and using fertilizer and chemicals and things like that.”
Last year, the Forest Service burned about 24,000 acres in prescribed burns in the state’s four national forests.
