RGS Announces its 2013 Print of the Year
Artist Christopher (Chris) Smith of Interlochen, Michigan was selected to create the 2013 RGS Print of the Year. His painting is entitled The Fall Shuffle.
Chris specializes in wildlife scenes and dog portraits for clients across the country. He has illustrated more than a dozen hunting and fishing books and is author and illustrator of Field Guide to Upland Birds and Waterfowl and co-author, with his brother Jason, of Waterfowling Horizons.
Chris, who has contributed artwork to several national magazines, including Ruffed Grouse Society, Upland Almanac and Ducks Unlimited, numbers among his awards the top honor as the 2009 Michigan Ducks Unlimited Sponsor Artist of the Year.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management from Lake Superior State University, Sault Saint Marie, Michigan.
The Fall Shuffle is his depiction of the autumn dispersal of the young grouse that have lived together as a brood for the past 16 weeks. The dispersal begins around mid-September, depending on location, and often seems to be a spur-of-the-moment event. With his painting, Chris illustrates that the birds sometimes leave on their fall journey in the direction they were facing when the urge to go suddenly becomes too strong to resist.
The giclee prints on canvas will be auctioned and available as one of the options for banquet sponsors at RGS banquets held this year. Each print will be signed and numbered by the artist. To order The Fall Shuffle, visit the Ruffed Grouse Society's online store RGS-Mart.
