The Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS)/American Woodcock Society (AWS) employ a number of individuals as Regional Directors (RD) who perform these general functions within a specified geographic region:

  • Represent RGS/AWS to volunteers and members by informing them of RGS/AWS programs and policies
  • Organize volunteers into Chapters and committees to assist with:
    • Fund-raising activities (banquets, shoots, hunts, youth events, golf tournaments and other similar activities)
  • Manage and be accountable for the results of those fund-raising activities
  • Identify individuals, companies and foundations capable of making a significant donation to RGS/AWS and bring them to the attention of the CEO and Development Director
  • Recruit new members, Centurion Members, Life Sponsors and Gullion Circle members
  • Educate their constituents via a quarterly Newsletter, e-mail, phone conversations and at least two annual face-to-face meetings with their committees in advance of their banquet.
  • Always represent the RGS/AWS with conduct reflective of the organization and in support of all RGS/AWS policies and programs. Further, the RD needs to “ride the brand” by wearing and using RGS/AWS branded clothing and accessories.

Specifically each RD is responsible for:

  • Managing volunteer committees, each of which conducts an annual membership banquet or similar fundraising activity.
  • Encouraging/Managing chapter-based ancillary events such as shoots, hunts and youth activities to generate revenue, and engage and motivate volunteers and general members
  • Hosting regular “Meet n’ Greet” events to form new Volunteer Chapters, working with RGS/AWS Regional Biologists to put on informative and productive meetings resulting in the growth of new chapters and volunteers.
  • Working on identifying new revenue streams and establishing a consistent cash flow throughout the entire calendar year.
  • Identifying local media (print and electronic) to publicize RGS/AWS press releases and feature stories about the RGS activities and accomplishments
  • Working closely with all field and Headquarters staff to create a “team approach” and effective working relationship stressing effective communication.
  • Working with the Supervising Regional Director to establish work plans and goals and then track results and report progress through established means.
  • Implementing the RGS/AWS Strategic Plan
  • All “other duties” as assigned

Each RD is expected to work a normal, full work year.  That work year includes working an average of 40 hours per week plus a “normal” amount of travel time for 52 weeks less any earned vacation or sick time.  Because these are exempt positions (non-hourly) it is expected that an RD works the amount of time necessary to get the job done.  That means that he or she may work in excess of 40 hours per week from time to time.  It is also understood that she or he may spend time hunting with a volunteer or potential donor as part of his or her work week.

RGS provides each RD with:

  • A travel advance and credit cards
  • Guidance and supervision via a Supervising RD
  • A vehicle capable of transporting banquet supplies
  • A personal computer and printer
  • A cell phone
  • Office supplies
  • Training and support from HQ and Field Staff
