ITASCA COUNTY -- It was hard to shoot ruffed grouse Saturday.

The woodcocks kept getting in the way.

"I guess we're gonna be hunting woodcock for a bit down here in this low area," Meadow Kouffeld-Hansen, my hunting partner for the morning, said at one point as we watched a pair of birds flutter out of sight in a thicket of young aspen. They were something like the seventh and eighth flushes of the morning -- but we were quickly losing track...
